Can I install car audio or an amplifier in an electric car?

Yes, it is often possible to upgrade an electric car’s audio system, for example by installing new speakers, a digital signal processor (DSP), a subwoofer or an external amplifier.

However, there are some important differences compared with installation in a conventional petrol or diesel car.

The electric car’s electrical system

Electric cars usually have both a high-voltage system for the drivetrain and a separate low-voltage system that powers the car’s electronics.

Car audio equipment is normally intended to connect to the car’s low-voltage system, often 12 volts.

It is important to check which voltage the car uses and how much additional load its low-voltage system can handle.

What should I consider during installation?

  • Check the power supply: The car’s low-voltage system must be able to handle the additional load from the audio equipment.

  • Use the correct connection points: Do not connect equipment directly to the high-voltage battery or high-voltage wiring.

  • Choose suitable products: Energy-efficient amplifiers can be beneficial when available power is limited.

  • Check the factory system: Some electric cars have advanced audio systems with digital signal processing and special connections.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: Installations must not affect the car’s safety systems or high-voltage components.

Can I install a powerful amplifier in an electric car?
This depends on the car’s low-voltage system and how much current the amplifier needs.

A powerful amplifier can place a significant additional load on the system. The installation must therefore be sized according to the car’s actual capabilities.

Important: Never work on an electric car’s high-voltage system without the appropriate training and authorisation for the work. High-voltage components can be lethal even when the car is switched off.
