Does a component speaker system need crossover filters?
Yes, a component system needs some form of crossover filter to ensure each speaker receives the correct frequencies.
A component system usually consists of separate tweeters and midbass drivers designed to reproduce different parts of the sound’s frequency range. The crossover distributes the audio signal between the speakers so they operate within the correct frequency range.
There are two common ways to divide the audio signal:
Passive crossovers
Most component systems are supplied with passive crossover filters connected between the car stereo or amplifier and the speakers.
The crossover automatically distributes the audio signal between the tweeter and midbass driver. This means you can usually drive a two-way component system using two amplification channels, one for the left side and one for the right.
Some component systems have simpler crossover filters integrated into the wiring or speakers rather than separate crossover boxes.
Active crossovers
With active crossovers, an audio processor (DSP), for example, divides the audio signal before it is amplified.
Each speaker is then driven by a separate amplification channel, giving greater scope to adjust crossover frequencies, audio levels and time alignment individually.
Active crossovers are common in more advanced sound systems where maximum control over the sound is desired.
Can I connect a component system without crossover filters?
If the component system is designed for passive crossovers, the supplied filters must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
A component system designed for active crossovers can be connected without passive filters, but frequency division must then be handled correctly by a DSP, for example.
Important: Never connect a tweeter directly to an unfiltered full-range signal without a suitable crossover filter. Excessively low frequencies can quickly damage the tweeter.
Always check the product’s specifications and installation instructions before connecting the speakers.
