How do I connect a reversing camera to my car stereo?
To connect a reversing camera, the car stereo must support an external camera and have a compatible video input.
Many aftermarket stereos have a dedicated camera input, usually labelled Rear Camera Input, Camera In or similar.
How the camera should be connected depends on which camera and car stereo you use.
How does the connection work?
A typical installation consists of three parts:
Video signal: The reversing camera’s video cable connects to the car stereo’s camera input.
Power supply: The camera connects to a suitable power source according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Reverse gear signal: The car stereo receives a signal indicating when reverse gear is selected, so that the camera image appears automatically.
In many installations, the reversing light’s power supply is used to activate the camera. However, some modern cars may require a specific interface or another solution to provide the camera with a stable power supply.
Why does the camera image not appear when I select reverse?
Check that:
The camera receives the correct supply voltage.
The video cable is connected to the correct input.
The car stereo’s camera input is enabled in the settings.
The stereo receives the correct reverse gear signal.
The camera’s video signal is compatible with the stereo.
Some cameras use AHD, for example, while others use CVBS. The car stereo must support the camera’s signal format.
Can I connect the car’s factory reversing camera to a new stereo?
This is often possible, but a specific adapter harness or interface may be needed.
Factory cameras may use different connectors, supply voltages and signal formats from conventional aftermarket cameras.
