How do I connect an amplifier to the car’s factory stereo?

It is often possible to connect an external amplifier to the car’s factory stereo, even if the stereo has no standard RCA outputs.

The solution required depends on how the car’s audio system is designed.

Option 1: An amplifier with a high-level input
Some amplifiers have a built-in high-level input that allows you to connect the audio signal from the car’s existing speaker cables.

This means you do not need RCA outputs from the stereo.

Check that the amplifier’s high-level input is compatible with the signal from the car’s factory system.

Option 2: A line output converter
If the amplifier only has RCA inputs, you can often use a high-level adapter, also called a LOC (Line Output Converter).

The adapter converts the speaker signal from the factory stereo into a line-level signal that can be connected to the amplifier’s RCA inputs.

Option 3: A digital signal processor (DSP)
For more advanced factory systems, a DSP may be a better option.

Depending on the model, a DSP can handle signals from the factory stereo and allow adjustment of crossovers, equalizer settings and time alignment.

This can be particularly useful if the car’s factory system has factory-set equalization or active crossovers.

How does the amplifier get power?
The amplifier normally needs:

  • A separate power cable from the battery with the correct fuse.

  • A secure ground connection.

  • A control signal to turn the amplifier on and off.

Some amplifiers switch on automatically through the high-level signal, while others need a separate remote turn-on signal.

What should I bear in mind?
Some modern cars have advanced factory amplifiers, digital audio systems or features such as active noise cancellation (ANC).

These systems may require dedicated adapters or installation solutions.
