How do I know if my car amplifier is faulty?

If an amplifier will not turn on, produces no sound or enters protection mode, this does not necessarily mean it is faulty.

Many problems are instead caused by incorrect wiring, an inadequate power supply or issues with the connected speakers.

Common signs that something is wrong

  • The amplifier will not turn on despite having the correct power supply.

  • The protect indicator stays on.

  • No sound comes from the connected speakers.

  • The amplifier switches off for no obvious reason.

  • The sound is severely distorted despite correct settings.

  • The amplifier smells burnt or shows visible damage.

If the amplifier has burned, is smoking or smells burnt: Stop using it and do not reconnect power to test it. Only disconnect power to the installation if this can be done safely according to the vehicle’s instructions. Contact customer service for assessment and a possible faulty-goods claim; do not open the amplifier yourself. If there is an active fire or immediate danger, keep your distance and call 112.

How can I troubleshoot an amplifier without signs of fire or burn damage?
Start by checking:

  1. That the amplifier receives the correct supply voltage.

  2. That the ground connection is secure.

  3. That the remote terminal receives the correct control signal.

  4. That the fuses are intact.

  5. That the speaker cables are not short-circuited.

  6. That the speaker impedance is compatible with the amplifier.

  7. That the audio signal from the car stereo or DSP works.

If the amplifier still enters protection mode, the speakers can be disconnected to rule out load-related problems.

Always switch off the power before changing connections.

When might there be an internal fault?
If the amplifier has the correct power supply, grounding and control signal but still does not work, even with no speakers connected, this may indicate an internal fault.

Do not try to open or repair the amplifier yourself.
