How do I secure a subwoofer enclosure safely in my car?

A subwoofer enclosure must not only be positioned for good sound. It must also be mounted so it cannot move while driving.

A heavy enclosure left loose in the boot can cause serious injury during heavy braking or a collision.

Consider the following when mounting it:

  • Secure the enclosure properly. Use suitable brackets, fittings or anchoring solutions rated for its weight.

  • Check the mounting points. Do not secure it to thin panels or parts that cannot withstand the load.

  • Do not obstruct safety equipment. The enclosure must not interfere with seat belts, airbag operation or other safety equipment.

  • Protect the cables. Route speaker and power cables so they cannot be pinched or damaged.

  • Check ventilation. If the enclosure has a built-in amplifier, allow sufficient space for cooling.

  • Check the mounting regularly. Make sure fittings and connections have not come loose.

Can I use hook-and-loop fasteners to hold the enclosure in place?

Hook-and-loop fasteners or non-slip material may reduce sliding during normal driving, but are generally not sufficient as the only anchoring method during heavy braking or a collision.

We recommend mechanical securing suited to the enclosure’s weight and the car’s construction.

Take care when drilling and mounting so you do not damage fuel lines, electrical cables, batteries or other components behind the mounting surface.
