How does Apple CarPlay work?

Apple CarPlay is a feature that lets you use selected apps and functions from your iPhone directly on the car’s screen. For example, you can navigate, listen to music, make calls and manage messages without needing to use the phone while driving.

CarPlay has an interface designed for driving and can be controlled through the car’s touchscreen, controls or Siri voice assistant.

What can you do with Apple CarPlay?

  • Navigation: Use apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze for directions and traffic information.

  • Music and audio: Listen to music, podcasts and audiobooks through compatible apps such as Spotify, Apple Music and other audio services.

  • Calls and messages: Make calls, have messages read aloud and reply using Siri.

  • Voice control: Use Siri to start navigation, change music or call a contact, for example.

  • Customised home screen: Choose which compatible apps are displayed and change their order.

The apps and features available depend on your iPhone, iOS version and car stereo’s compatibility.

How do I connect my iPhone to Apple CarPlay?
There are two common ways to connect:

  • With a USB cable: Connect your iPhone to the car stereo’s USB port that supports CarPlay.

  • Wirelessly: If the car stereo supports wireless CarPlay, your iPhone can connect via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi without a cable.

When connecting for the first time, you usually need to allow CarPlay on your iPhone. After that, the connection can be made automatically when you start the car.

Can I get Apple CarPlay in an older car?
Yes, in many cases you can upgrade an older car with Apple CarPlay by installing a compatible aftermarket stereo.

Depending on the car model, you may need a fascia panel, specific wiring harness or other installation accessories for the stereo to work with the car’s existing equipment.

Can I make Apple CarPlay wireless?
Yes, if your car stereo already supports Apple CarPlay via USB, it may be possible in many cases to use a compatible wireless CarPlay adapter.

The adapter usually connects to the car’s USB port and lets you connect your iPhone wirelessly.

Please note that this type of adapter normally requires the car to already support wired Apple CarPlay. It cannot add CarPlay to a stereo that does not have the feature at all.

Do I need a particular iPhone for Apple CarPlay?
Apple CarPlay requires a compatible iPhone with an iOS version that supports the feature. Some newer features may require a later version of iOS or specific support from the car or car stereo.

CarPlay does not work with Android phones. The equivalent feature for these is Android Auto.

How do I customise Apple CarPlay?
You can customise which apps are displayed and their order directly on your iPhone.

Go to Settings → General → CarPlay, select your car and customise the apps.

You can also change certain settings directly in CarPlay, depending on the car stereo and iOS version.
