How should I ground my car amplifier?

A correct ground connection is essential for the amplifier to work as it should.

Poor grounding can cause interference, voltage drop, overheating or the amplifier entering protect mode.

In the worst case, an incorrect ground connection can damage the equipment.

Where should I connect the ground cable?
The amplifier’s ground cable should normally be connected to a suitable ground point on the car’s chassis.

Choose a solid metal part with a good electrical connection to the car’s main grounding system.

What should I consider?

  • Use a ground cable with sufficient cross-sectional area for the amplifier’s current requirements.

  • Keep the ground cable as short as practically possible.

  • Make sure the contact surface is free from paint, rust and dirt.

  • Use a suitable cable lug and a mechanically secure connection.

  • Check that the ground point has a good electrical connection to the battery’s negative terminal.

Avoid using thin body panels or mounting points where you cannot ensure a reliable ground connection.

Also check that the car’s existing ground connections are in good condition.

How do I know if the grounding is good?
A visual inspection is not always enough.

With a multimeter, you can check the voltage drop between the amplifier’s ground connection and the battery’s negative terminal while the amplifier is under load.

A large voltage drop indicates excessive resistance in the ground connection.
