How should I position my speakers for the best sound?

Speaker placement has a major impact on sound quality.

Even a good audio system can sound worse if the speakers are poorly positioned.

Position the speakers symmetrically

For stereo listening, a good starting point is often to position the speakers so that they form an approximately equilateral triangle with the listening position.

This means that the distance between the speakers roughly matches the distance from each speaker to the listening position.

Position the tweeters at ear height

For many speakers, it is advisable for the tweeter to be roughly at ear height when you are seated at your normal listening position.

This helps create a clear and balanced soundstage.

Consider the distance from the walls

Speakers placed near walls or corners may produce stronger bass.

This can be beneficial in some situations, but it can also make the bass excessive or unclear.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and experiment with placement.

Should the speakers be angled towards the listening position?

Many speakers work well when angled slightly inwards towards the listening position.

This is often called toe-in.

The appropriate angle varies between models.

Do furniture and furnishings affect the sound?

Yes.

Large bare surfaces can create pronounced reflections, while rugs, curtains and upholstered furniture can help dampen some reflections.

The room’s acoustics therefore affect the sound at least as much as speaker placement.

Tip: Start with symmetrical placement, then make small adjustments to the distances and angles until the soundstage feels balanced.
