How should I position the speakers in a home cinema system?

Speaker placement has a major impact on how a home cinema system sounds.

Correct placement helps create a coherent soundstage in which dialogue, music and sound effects appear to come from the right direction.

Front speakers

The left and right front speakers are normally placed on either side of the TV or projection screen.

Ideally, they should be roughly the same distance from the main listening position.

A common recommendation is to position them at approximately 22–30 degrees on each side of the forward direction from the listening position.

Centre speaker

The centre speaker is normally placed as close to the centre of the screen as possible, usually directly above or below the TV.

Aim it towards the listening position for clear dialogue.

Surround speakers in a 5.1 system

The surround speakers are usually positioned slightly to the sides of or behind the listening position.

A common guideline is approximately 110–120 degrees from straight ahead.

They should be positioned as symmetrically as possible.

Rear surround speakers in a 7.1 system

A 7.1 system adds two rear surround speakers.

They are positioned behind the listening position and help create a more coherent soundstage from the rear.

Height speakers for Dolby Atmos

For Dolby Atmos, height speakers can be installed in the ceiling or at other positions according to Dolby’s recommendations for the relevant speaker configuration.

The placement differs depending on whether you use 5.1.2 or 5.1.4, for example.

Where should the subwoofer go?

Subwoofer placement is more flexible.

However, bass reproduction is strongly affected by room acoustics.

It can therefore be worth trying several positions to find even, controlled bass.

Do all speakers have to be at exactly the same distance?

No.

Many home cinema receivers can compensate for different distances by adjusting the delay between channels.

It is still beneficial to start with placement that is as symmetrical as possible.

Tip: Follow the recommendations for your specific speaker configuration and run the receiver’s room calibration once the speakers are positioned.
