How should I store my marine audio equipment over winter?

Marine audio products are often designed to withstand tough conditions, but correct winter storage can help extend their lifespan.

It is particularly important to protect the equipment against prolonged moisture, condensation and corrosion.

Do I need to remove the marine stereo?

Not always.

Many marine stereos can remain fitted over winter if they are correctly installed and the storage environment meets the manufacturer’s requirements.

However, if the stereo is very exposed or the boat is stored outdoors, removing it may be appropriate if the manufacturer recommends it.

Do I need to remove the speakers?

Marine speakers can often remain fitted, but this depends on their design and how the boat is stored.

Check that the speakers will not be left standing in water or exposed to conditions exceeding the product’s specifications.

How do I protect amplifiers and electronics?

  • Check that the equipment is dry before winter storage.

  • Make sure water cannot collect around the electronics.

  • Check cables and connections for signs of corrosion.

  • Protect exposed connectors according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Make sure the equipment is not exposed to prolonged condensation.

Should I disconnect the battery?

If the boat will not be used for an extended period, it may be appropriate to disconnect or switch off parts of the electrical system according to the boat’s and battery manufacturer’s instructions.

Batteries also need to be stored and maintained in a way suitable for their battery technology.

Do I need to do anything before using the sound system in spring?

Yes, it is sensible to carry out a basic check before switching on the equipment.

Check that:

  • Cables and connections are intact.

  • There are no visible signs of corrosion.

  • The equipment is dry.

  • The battery and power supply work correctly.

  • Fuses and connections are in good condition.

If you discover moisture or corrosion, address the problem before using the equipment.
