In what order should I wash my car?
To get your car clean while reducing the risk of wash scratches, it is important to wash it in the right order.
A common and effective washing process is:
Solvent-based degreaser if needed: Apply to areas with asphalt, tar and greasy dirt, usually the lower parts of the car.
Alkaline pre-wash: Use a suitable pre-wash product to loosen traffic film and other road grime.
Rinse the car: Rinse thoroughly, preferably using a pressure washer at a safe distance, to remove as much dirt as possible before hand washing.
Hand wash: Wash with car shampoo and a clean wash mitt. Work from the top down.
Wheels and tyres: Clean with products and tools designed for the purpose. Do not use the same dirty tools on the paintwork.
Final rinse: Rinse away all cleaning product residues.
Dry: Dry the car with a clean, soft microfibre towel designed for car paintwork.
If needed, the wash can be supplemented with an iron fallout remover or other specialist products.
Tip: Ideally, wash the car in the shade and on a cool surface. This reduces the risk of cleaning products and water drying on the surface.
Remember that wash water can contain oil, metals and chemicals. Use a suitable washing area where the water is collected and treated.
