Is gain a volume control?
No, gain is not a volume control. Gain is an amplifier setting used to match the amplifier’s input sensitivity to the audio signal from the car stereo or digital signal processor (DSP).
Although the sound may become louder when you turn up the gain, this does not increase the amplifier’s power capability.
What does gain do on an amplifier?
Gain determines how strong the incoming audio signal must be for the amplifier to reach its maximum output power.
If the car stereo sends a strong signal, gain usually needs to be set lower. If the signal is weaker, gain may need to be set higher.
The aim is for the amplifier to deliver its power without distorting the audio signal.
What happens if gain is set too high?
If gain is set too high, the amplifier may amplify the signal so much that it clips, known as clipping.
This distorts the audio signal and may cause:
Distortion and reduced sound quality.
Increased heat in the speakers’ voice coils.
A risk of damage to speakers and subwoofers.
Excessive gain can therefore damage speakers even if the amplifier’s stated RMS power is lower than the speakers’ power handling.
What happens if gain is set too low?
If gain is too low, it may be difficult to use the amplifier’s available power, even when you increase the car stereo’s volume.
However, a low gain setting is not harmful in itself.
How do I set gain correctly?
Gain should be set based on the car stereo’s output signal and the amplifier’s specifications.
A correct setting can be established using equipment such as an oscilloscope or distortion detector to identify when the signal starts clipping.
It is also important to consider the speakers’ power handling and ensure the amplifier’s crossovers are set correctly.
Turning up the gain until it sounds loud enough is not a reliable method.
Can I use gain to adjust the bass level?
Gain can affect how loudly the subwoofer enclosure plays relative to the other speakers, but its primary purpose is to match the amplifier’s input sensitivity.
If you want to adjust the bass level while driving, a separate bass level control, if supported by the amplifier, or the car stereo’s audio settings are better options.
However, a bass level control cannot increase the amplifier’s maximum clean output power.
