My amplifier will not switch on. What can I do?
If your amplifier will not switch on, the problem may be due to the power supply, ground connection, control signal or a fuse.
There are a few things you can check before we proceed with a possible service case.
1. Check whether the amplifier receives power
Check whether any indicator on the amplifier is lit when the car stereo is switched on.
Many amplifiers have a Power indicator and a separate Protect indicator.
If no indicator is lit, the amplifier may not be receiving the correct power supply or turn-on signal.
2. Check the fuses
Check that the fuses are intact.
Depending on the installation, there may be fuses both on the amplifier and on the power cable near the battery.
If a fuse has blown, it must only be replaced with one of the correct type and current rating.
If the fuse blows again, stop troubleshooting.
3. Check the power and ground connections
Check that the power and ground cables are securely connected.
The ground cable must be connected to a suitable ground point with good electrical contact.
A poor ground connection may prevent the amplifier from switching on or cause unstable operation.
4. Check the REM signal
Most amplifiers need a control signal through the REM connection to switch on.
Check that the REM cable is correctly connected and that the amplifier receives a turn-on signal when the car stereo is switched on.
Some amplifiers have an automatic turn-on function and use a different method to detect when they should switch on.
5. Check the voltage
If you have a multimeter and know how to carry out the measurement, you can check the voltage at the amplifier’s power connections.
On a conventional 12 V system, battery voltage is normally around 12–13 V with the engine off and often around 13.5–14.8 V with the engine running.
Also check that the REM connection receives the correct control voltage when the amplifier should be switched on.
If you are unsure, we recommend getting help from a qualified installer.
6. If the problem persists
If the amplifier still will not switch on, we need the following information:
The amplifier’s brand and model.
The amplifier’s serial number.
Which car and car stereo are used.
Whether the amplifier worked previously.
Whether any Power or Protect indicator is lit.
Whether the fuses have been checked.
The cross-sectional area of the power and ground cables in mm².
Whether the cables are made of OFC (copper) or CCA (copper-clad aluminium).
Whether the installation uses one or more batteries.
Please attach clear photos of:
The amplifier’s power, ground and REM connections.
The ground point where the ground cable is connected.
The fuse holder and power cable connection.
The amplifier’s serial number.
With this information, we can help you further and assess whether additional troubleshooting or servicing is needed.
