My battery charger will not charge the battery. What can I do?
If your charger switches on but does not charge the battery, the problem may be the battery’s condition, charger settings or the connection between them.
1. Check the connection to the battery
Check that the charger is connected correctly.
Make sure positive (+) and negative (−) are connected according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Also check that clamps or other connections are secure and make good contact.
Heavy corrosion at battery terminals or loose connections can affect charging.
2. Check the battery type
Different battery types may need different charging programmes.
Check which type you are charging, for example:
Standard lead-acid.
AGM.
GEL.
EFB.
Lithium, such as LiFePO4.
Check that the charger is compatible with the battery type and the correct programme is selected.
Do not use a programme unsuitable for the battery’s chemistry or specifications.
3. Check the battery voltage
If the battery is deeply discharged, some chargers may struggle to detect it or start charging.
If you have a multimeter and know how to take the measurement, check the battery voltage.
Compare it with the battery and charger specifications.
Do not bypass the charger’s safety features by using another battery or an external power source to force charging to start.
4. Check the charging programme
If the charger has several modes, check that the correct programme is selected.
Some chargers have dedicated programmes for AGM, lithium or maintenance charging, for example.
Also check whether it is in standby or displays an error.
5. Check the battery temperature
Some chargers limit or stop charging if the battery is too hot or cold.
This is particularly important for lithium batteries.
Check the battery and charger manuals for their permitted temperature ranges.
6. Check any app and firmware
If the charger supports an app, check the information it displays.
For example:
Battery voltage.
Charging current.
Current charging stage.
Any error messages.
The selected charging programme.
Also check the firmware version and whether the manufacturer offers a relevant update.
Update only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. If the problem persists
If the charger still will not charge, we need:
The charger’s brand, model and serial number.
The battery type.
The battery voltage and capacity in Ah, if available.
The selected charging programme.
Whether charging starts or the charger does not react at all.
Whether any error appears.
The charger’s firmware version, if you can check it.
The app readings when the problem occurs, if supported.
Whether it worked with the same battery before.
Please also attach clear photos of:
The charger’s serial number.
The battery label showing type and specifications.
Any error messages.
The app readings, if supported.
With this information, we can help you further and assess whether the problem is the charger, battery or settings.
