What does RMS mean?

RMS stands for Root Mean Square and is used in audio technology to describe a product’s continuous power level, usually specified in watts (W).

When comparing speakers and amplifiers, RMS is one of the most important specifications to look at.

  • Speakers: The RMS power rating indicates how much power the speaker is designed to handle continuously under specified conditions.

  • Amplifiers: The RMS power rating indicates how much power the amplifier can deliver continuously at a particular impedance (ohms) and under specified measurement conditions.

What is the difference between RMS and MAX/Peak?

MAX or Peak usually indicates a higher power level that the product can handle or deliver for a short time. These values are often less useful for comparisons because they may be measured and specified in different ways.

Use RMS power as your primary reference when comparing products or matching speakers to an amplifier.

Remember that power is not the only factor determining how well products work together. Impedance, sensitivity and correct amplifier settings are equally important for good sound without risking damage to the equipment.
