What is a car audio speaker board?
A car audio speaker board, known in Swedish as a raggarplanka, and sometimes called a raggarlåda, SPL-planka or simply planka, is a speaker enclosure built to play loudly and deliver powerful sound, mainly in the midrange and treble.
These speaker boards are particularly popular in car audio culture and are often used with powerful amplifiers to achieve high sound levels.
How does a car audio speaker board work?
It usually consists of several speakers mounted in a shared enclosure. One popular configuration is four midrange speakers and two tweeters, but many variations exist.
Midrange and midbass drivers: Mainly reproduce vocals, instruments and parts of the bass range.
Tweeters: Reproduce the highest frequencies and contribute to clear, detailed sound.
Speaker enclosure: Provides a shared structure that affects speaker performance.
Amplifier: Often used to give the speakers enough power to play very loudly.
Where is a speaker board mounted?
Speaker boards are often placed on the parcel shelf or in the boot, but the location depends on the car model and enclosure design.
It is important to secure the enclosure properly so it cannot move during heavy braking or an accident.
Do I also need a subwoofer enclosure?
A speaker board is mainly designed for loud midrange and treble. If you also want powerful deep bass, we recommend adding a separate subwoofer enclosure.
Are ready-made speaker boards available?
Yes. At BRL Electronics you can find both assembled speaker boards and individual speakers, tweeters and accessories for building your own.
