What is a coaxial speaker?
A coaxial speaker combines several speaker drivers in a single unit. Usually, a tweeter is mounted in the centre of a larger driver that reproduces midrange and lower frequencies.
This allows a coaxial speaker to reproduce a wide frequency range without needing separate tweeters to be installed.
What are the benefits of coaxial speakers?
Easy installation: Several drivers are integrated into the same unit, which often makes them easier to install than a separate component system.
Wide frequency range: Reproduces both midrange and treble in the same speaker.
Many sizes: Common sizes include 3.5, 4, 5.25, 6.5 and 6×9 inches.
Good-value upgrade: A popular option for improving the sound compared with the car’s factory speakers.
What is the difference between coaxial speakers and component systems?
In a coaxial speaker, the tweeter and larger driver are mounted together. In a component system, the drivers are separate, giving you more freedom to position the tweeter to optimise the soundstage.
Coaxial speakers are therefore often a convenient option for straightforward speaker replacements, while component systems may be a better choice when you want greater control over sound reproduction and positioning.
Do I need to add a subwoofer enclosure?
Coaxial speakers can reproduce some bass, but are not usually designed to play the very lowest frequencies at high volume. If you want a fuller sound with more deep bass, you can add a subwoofer enclosure.
For the best possible result, it may also be worth using sound-deadening material in the doors. This can reduce vibration and improve the speakers’ ability to reproduce sound correctly.
