What is a component speaker system?

A component system is a set of separate speakers that together reproduce different parts of the sound’s frequency range. Unlike a coaxial speaker, where several drivers are mounted in the same unit, a component system consists of separate drivers that can be positioned in different places in the car.

A typical component system consists of two midbass drivers and two tweeters. The midbass drivers reproduce bass and midrange frequencies, while the tweeters handle the highest frequencies.

Positioning the tweeters higher up in the car, for example in the A-pillars or dashboard, can create a clearer, more natural soundstage than if all the sound comes from speakers low down in the doors.

What are the benefits of a component system?

  • Better soundstage: Separate tweeters give greater scope to position the sound in front of the listener.

  • Clearer detail: Each driver is designed to reproduce a specific frequency range.

  • Flexible installation: The speakers can be positioned individually to suit the car’s layout.

  • Greater upgrade potential: Component systems can be combined with amplifiers and an audio processor (DSP) for further sound improvements.

Component systems are usually available as two-way or three-way systems, depending on how many different types of driver are included.

Most component systems also use crossover filters to ensure each speaker receives the correct frequencies.

Is a component system better than a coaxial speaker?
A component system generally offers greater scope to optimise the soundstage thanks to its separate drivers. However, installation often involves more work.

Coaxial speakers are usually easier to fit and can be a good option if you want to upgrade the car’s factory speakers without major modifications.

If you prioritise sound quality and want to build a more carefully developed sound system, a component system is often a good choice.
