What is a four-channel amplifier?
A four-channel amplifier has four separate amplification channels used to drive speakers in the car. It is a flexible option if you want to improve sound quality, gain more power and expand your sound system.
A four-channel amplifier can usually drive four speakers, but many models can also be bridged to drive a subwoofer enclosure, for example.
What can I connect to a four-channel amplifier?
There are several common ways to use a four-channel amplifier:
Four speakers: Drive a front component system and a pair of rear coaxial speakers, for example.
Two speakers and a subwoofer enclosure: Use two channels for the front speakers and bridge the remaining two channels to a subwoofer.
Two component systems: Drive a front and a rear component system, with each system’s crossover distributing the sound between the midrange drivers and tweeters.
The connection options available depend on the amplifier’s design and specifications.
What does bridging an amplifier mean?
Bridging combines two amplification channels to drive a shared speaker load. This makes it possible to obtain higher power for a subwoofer, for example.
Not all amplifiers support bridging, and the minimum permitted impedance is usually higher when bridged than with a conventional connection.
What should I consider when choosing a four-channel amplifier?
RMS power: Choose an amplifier with suitable power for the speakers you will drive.
Impedance (ohms): Check that the speakers’ impedance is compatible with the amplifier, especially when bridging.
Crossover filters: Many four-channel amplifiers have built-in high-pass and low-pass filters that let you tailor the frequency range to different speakers.
Connections: Make sure you use the correct power cables, fuses and ground connections.
Do I need a four-channel amplifier or a monoblock?
A four-channel amplifier is a good option if you want to drive several conventional car speakers or combine front speakers with a smaller subwoofer enclosure.
If you want to drive one or more powerful subwoofers, however, a monoblock is often a better option, as it is usually specifically designed to deliver high power to the bass range.
