What is a monoblock amplifier?
A monoblock, also known as a mono amplifier, is an amplifier with a single amplification channel. In car audio, monoblocks are mainly used to drive one or more subwoofers and deliver high power to the bass range.
Unlike a two-channel or four-channel amplifier, a monoblock has only one audio channel and therefore cannot reproduce separate right and left signals in stereo.
What is a monoblock used for?
Driving subwoofers: The most common application is driving one or more subwoofers with high power.
Powerful bass reproduction: Many monoblocks are specifically designed to deliver high power at low frequencies.
Full range: Some monoblocks can also amplify the entire frequency range and be used with other types of speaker.
Can I connect several subwoofers to a monoblock?
Yes, several subwoofers can often be connected to the same monoblock. The important thing is that their total impedance (ohms) does not fall below the amplifier’s minimum permitted load.
Also check that the amplifier’s RMS power suits the subwoofers’ power handling.
Please note that some monoblocks have several speaker terminals even though they have only one amplification channel. These terminals are usually internally connected in parallel, so they do not act as separate channels.
What should I consider during installation?
A powerful monoblock places high demands on the car’s electrical system and installation.
Power cables: Use cables with sufficient cross-sectional area, preferably 100% copper (OFC), to minimise voltage drop.
Grounding: Make sure the ground connection is correctly made and has good electrical contact.
Fuse: The power cable must be correctly fused near the battery.
Power supply: Check that the car’s battery and alternator can meet the amplifier’s power requirements.
Settings: Adjust gain, the low-pass filter and any subsonic filter to suit the subwoofers and enclosure design.
For installations with high power demands, upgrading the battery, alternator or wiring may also be necessary.
