What is a passive subwoofer enclosure?
A passive subwoofer enclosure is an enclosure without a built-in amplifier, so it needs to be connected to an external amplifier to work.
Unlike an active subwoofer enclosure, which already has an amplifier built in, a passive enclosure gives you more freedom to choose the amplifier that will drive the subwoofer drivers.
Passive subwoofer enclosures are common in car audio systems where powerful bass and the ability to customise or upgrade the equipment are important.
What are the benefits of a passive subwoofer enclosure?
Flexibility: You can choose an amplifier that suits the enclosure’s power requirements.
Upgrade options: The amplifier and enclosure can be replaced separately.
Wide choice: Passive enclosures come in different sizes, with different numbers of drivers and enclosure designs.
High power: Some passive enclosures are designed to handle very high power levels.
What types of passive subwoofer enclosure are available?
Passive enclosures are available in several configurations, for example with 10-, 12- or 15-inch drivers. There are also models with two or more drivers in the same enclosure.
The two most common enclosure designs are:
Sealed enclosure: Has a completely sealed design and often provides controlled, responsive bass reproduction.
Ported enclosure: Has one or more bass reflex ports that help reinforce bass reproduction within a particular frequency range. A ported enclosure can often play louder than a comparable sealed enclosure.
The best design depends on the bass reproduction you prefer, how much space you have and which drivers are used.
What do I need to use a passive subwoofer enclosure?
To connect a passive enclosure, you need a compatible amplifier and the right wiring.
It is important that the amplifier’s RMS power and permitted impedance (ohms) match the enclosure’s specifications. A monoblock is often a good option, as it is specifically designed to drive subwoofers.
