What is a tweeter?

A tweeter is a speaker designed to reproduce the highest frequencies in music.

The tweeter plays an important role in the sound’s detail and clarity. For example, it reproduces many of the high-frequency details from cymbals, vocals and other instruments.

What does a tweeter do?

  • Reproduces high frequencies: Tweeters usually operate from a few thousand hertz up to around 20,000 Hz.

  • Improves detail: Helps reproduce small details and nuances in the music.

  • Creates a clearer soundstage: Correctly positioned tweeters can improve sound dispersion and the perception of stereo imaging.

What is the difference between a tweeter and a midrange speaker?
A tweeter reproduces the highest frequencies, while a midrange speaker handles the frequencies in between, including much of the vocals and instruments.

In a component system, the tweeter and midrange speaker are separate, giving greater freedom to position them for the best possible soundstage. In a coaxial speaker, the tweeter is instead integrated into the same unit as the larger driver.

Does a tweeter need a crossover filter?
Yes, tweeters need a suitable crossover filter that prevents excessively low frequencies from reaching them. Without correct filtering, the speaker risks being damaged. Therefore, do not disconnect supplied capacitors or protective filters to test a tweeter or horn driver, even temporarily at low volume. If the sound is weak or absent, check connections with the power switched off and verify the signal and filter settings against the manual, keeping the protective filters in place. Contact customer service if the fault persists.

The crossover may be built in, supplied with the speaker or handled by an active sound system using a DSP, for example.

Where should tweeters be positioned in the car?
Tweeters are often positioned in the car’s A-pillars, dashboard or upper part of the doors. Their position and angle affect the soundstage, as high frequencies are relatively directional.

For the best possible result, the tweeters should be positioned and adjusted together with the other speakers in the sound system.
