What is the difference between an active and a passive subwoofer enclosure?
The difference between an active and a passive subwoofer enclosure is that an active enclosure has a built-in amplifier, whereas a passive enclosure needs to be driven by a separate amplifier.
Both options are used to reproduce the lowest bass frequencies and give the sound system a fuller, more powerful sound.
Active subwoofer enclosure
An active enclosure has a built-in amplifier matched to its subwoofer driver. This means you do not need to buy and install a separate amplifier.
Active enclosures are often compact, with models available for mounting under car seats or in the boot, among other locations.
Benefits of an active enclosure:
A built-in amplifier matched to the enclosure.
Often a simpler, more convenient installation.
Compact options for cars with limited space.
A good option for adding more bass to the car’s factory system.
Passive subwoofer enclosure
A passive enclosure has no built-in amplifier and therefore needs to be connected to an external amplifier.
This gives greater flexibility, as you can choose an amplifier that suits the enclosure’s power requirements and your preferences.
Benefits of a passive enclosure:
Greater freedom to choose an amplifier.
The option to upgrade the enclosure and amplifier separately.
A wide choice of sizes and designs.
Many options for truly powerful bass reproduction.
Which enclosure should I choose?
An active enclosure is often a good option if you want a simple installation, to save space and to complement the car’s existing sound system.
A passive enclosure is often more suitable if you want to build a more powerful sound system and choose and upgrade the amplifier yourself.
However, a passive enclosure is not automatically more powerful than an active one. Sound quality and performance depend on the driver, enclosure design, amplifier and installation.
Whichever type you choose, the enclosure needs to be connected to the car’s sound system and power supply. Active enclosures also require installation and correct wiring.
