What is the difference between standmount and floorstanding speakers?

Standmount and floorstanding speakers are two common types of home audio speakers.

The main differences are their size and intended placement.

Standmount speakers

Standmount speakers are usually smaller and designed to be placed on speaker stands, shelves or other suitable surfaces.

They often work well in smaller rooms or where space is limited.

Despite their size, standmount speakers can deliver excellent sound quality.

Floorstanding speakers

Floorstanding speakers are larger and designed to stand directly on the floor.

They often have larger cabinets and more or larger speaker drivers.

This usually gives them greater potential for deep bass and high sound levels.

Which type should I choose?

Standmount speakers are often a good choice if you:

  • Have a smaller room.

  • Want a discreet installation.

  • Plan to add a subwoofer.

  • Prioritise flexibility in placement.

Floorstanding speakers are often a good choice if you:

  • Have a larger room.

  • Want more bass without a separate subwoofer.

  • Want to play at higher sound levels.

  • Have enough space around the speakers.

However, it is important to remember that a good standmount speaker can sound better than a more basic floorstanding speaker.

Size is only one of several factors that affect sound quality.
