What is the difference between strobe lights and warning lights?

Strobe lights and warning lights are terms often used together, but they do not describe exactly the same thing.

Strobe light usually means a lamp emitting short, intense flashes.

Warning light is a broader term for lighting used to alert other road users to a vehicle, worksite or particular situation.

A strobe light can therefore be a type of warning light.

What types of warning light are available?

LED strobe lights

Compact lamps that flash in various patterns.

Warning light bars

Larger lighting units often mounted on a vehicle’s roof.

Rotating beacons

Lamps producing a rotating light effect, mechanically or electronically.

Position and marker lights

Used to indicate a vehicle’s position or outline, but not automatically approved as warning lights.

What do orange and blue warning lights mean?

In Sweden, yellow or amber warning lights are used, among other things, to alert other road users to certain work vehicles, roadworks and hazardous situations.

Blue warning lights are reserved for specifically authorised vehicles and services, such as emergency vehicles.

Specific rules determine which vehicles may use different warning lights and when they may be activated.

Can I fit strobe lights to my standard car?

This depends on their intended use and the rules applying to the vehicle.

Being able to install a product does not mean it may be used in traffic.

For warning lights, check both the product’s approval and the rules governing use on the vehicle.

Remember: Some products are intended for work vehicles, enclosed sites or specific applications and are not automatically permitted on public roads.
