Which adapters and cables do I need when replacing my car stereo?

When replacing your car stereo, you may need various adapters and fitting parts so that the new stereo fits and works correctly in your car.

The accessories needed depend on the car model, model year, existing sound system and the stereo you want to install.

Common accessories when replacing a car stereo

  • Stereo fascia panel or fitting frame: Allows the new stereo to fit in the car’s dashboard and provides a neat finish.

  • ISO adapter or vehicle-specific wiring harness: Adapts the car’s factory connectors to the new stereo’s connections.

  • Aerial adapter: May be needed to connect the car’s factory aerial to the new stereo. Some cars also need an adapter that supplies power to the aerial amplifier.

  • Steering wheel control adapter: Lets you retain compatible functions from the car’s steering wheel buttons, such as volume control and track selection.

  • Factory amplifier adapter: May be needed if the car has a factory-fitted sound system with a separate amplifier, such as Bose or Harman Kardon.

  • Reversing camera adapter: May be needed if you want to retain the car’s existing reversing camera and display its picture on the new stereo.

Not every car needs all these accessories. Some adapters can also combine several functions.

Can I retain the car’s factory features?

In many cases, features such as steering wheel controls, the reversing camera and factory amplifier can be retained when replacing the car stereo.

This depends on the car’s features, the stereo you choose and which compatible adapters are available.

Some vehicle functions may be integrated into the factory stereo and require specific solutions. It is therefore important to check compatibility before replacing the stereo.
