Which battery should I choose for my motorhome’s living area?
A motorhome’s living area normally uses a leisure battery designed to power electrical equipment over longer periods.
Unlike a starter battery, which needs to deliver high current for a short time, a leisure battery must withstand repeated charging and discharging cycles.
Which battery types are common?
AGM
An established option that can work well in many motorhomes.
AGM batteries are relatively straightforward to use in systems designed for lead-acid batteries, but are heavier and normally have less usable capacity than equivalent lithium solutions.
Lithium (LiFePO4)
LiFePO4 has become a popular option for motorhomes thanks to its low weight, high usable capacity and long cycle life.
However, it requires a compatible charging system and a battery management system (BMS).
When charging at low temperatures, the battery’s specific limitations must be followed.
How much capacity do I need?
This depends on how much electricity you use and how long you want to stay without external charging.
Examples of equipment that affects consumption:
Refrigerator.
Lighting.
Water pump.
TV and audio system.
Mobile phones and other electronics.
Inverter and connected 230 V products.
To size the battery, you need to estimate daily energy consumption and how many days the battery should last.
Can I switch from AGM to lithium in my motorhome?
Yes, in many cases this is possible, but it is not always a direct replacement.
You need to check that the motorhome’s battery charger, any solar charge controller and charging from the vehicle’s electrical system are compatible with the lithium battery.
Some installations require a DC-DC charger or other adaptations, for example.
Always check the requirements before changing battery technology.
