Why are there water spots after washing my car?
Water spots usually occur when water evaporates and leaves minerals and other substances on the paintwork.
This is particularly common if you wash the car in direct sunlight or let it air-dry.
Common causes
Limescale and minerals in the water
Tap water contains varying amounts of minerals. When the water evaporates, these minerals can leave visible spots.
Warm paintwork
If the car is in the sun, water evaporates faster, increasing the risk of spots.
Insufficient rinsing
Residues of car shampoo or other cleaning products can also cause marks.
How do I avoid water spots?
Wash the car in the shade and on a cool surface.
Rinse thoroughly after washing.
Dry the car immediately with a clean microfibre towel.
If needed, use a drying aid designed for car paintwork.
For recurring problems, demineralised water can be used for the final rinse.
How do I remove existing water spots?
Fresh spots can sometimes be removed with a normal wash.
More stubborn mineral deposits may require a dedicated water spot remover.
If the minerals have caused permanent marks in the paint surface, polishing may be needed.
