Why is my subwoofer enclosure not playing?
If your subwoofer enclosure is not playing, the problem may be due to the amplifier, signal transmission, wiring or the subwoofer itself.
Start by checking whether you have an active or passive enclosure.
An active enclosure has a built-in amplifier, whereas a passive enclosure needs a separate amplifier.
1. Check that the amplifier switches on
If you use a passive enclosure, first make sure the amplifier is working.
Check that:
The amplifier receives power.
The ground connection is correct.
The remote signal works.
The fuses are intact.
The amplifier is not in protect mode.
2. Check the audio signal
If the amplifier is switched on but the enclosure is not playing, the audio signal may be missing.
Check the RCA cables or high-level connection between the car stereo and amplifier.
Also check that the car stereo’s subwoofer output is enabled, if that output is used.
3. Check the amplifier’s settings
Incorrect settings can make the enclosure play very quietly or not at all.
For example, check:
Gain.
Low-pass filter (LPF).
Subsonic filter, if fitted.
Any bass level control.
Settings in the car stereo or DSP.
4. Check the speaker cables
Check that the cables between the amplifier and enclosure are securely connected.
If the enclosure has a connection terminal, also check that it is not damaged and has no loose connection.
5. Check the subwoofer
If everything else works, the fault may be in the subwoofer itself.
A qualified installer can, among other things, measure the voice coil’s resistance to check whether it is open-circuit or short-circuited.
